Tinubu to Criminals: Surrender Now or Face the Full Force of the Law

President Bola Tinubu has issued a strong warning to bandits, kidnappers and terrorist groups across the country, telling them to surrender or face decisive action from the Nigerian government. The warning formed part of his Democracy Day address delivered on June 12.

The President said his administration remains determined to restore security and protect citizens from criminal activities. While speaking on the security situation, he stressed that those involved in violence and bloodshed would not be allowed to continue threatening the peace of the country.

Tinubu stated that the government is still giving willing fighters an opportunity to lay down their weapons and return to society. He warned, however, that the window for surrender would not remain open forever. According to him, anyone who refuses to abandon criminal activities should expect the full force of the law.

The President also highlighted what he described as progress in the fight against insecurity. He revealed that more than 13,000 terrorists had been neutralised within the past year, while over 124,000 fighters and their family members had surrendered through rehabilitation and reintegration programmes since 2023. He added that terror-related deaths have dropped significantly as a result of ongoing security operations.

According to Tinubu, security agencies have increased intelligence gathering and intensified operations against criminal groups in different parts of the country. He said the government would continue investing in security institutions and strengthening efforts to dismantle terrorist networks and kidnapping gangs.

Beyond security, the President used the occasion to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic journey. He praised Nigerians for sustaining democratic rule for 27 uninterrupted years and urged citizens to continue supporting democratic institutions. He said disagreements should be resolved through lawful and peaceful means rather than violence.

Tinubu also paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12 struggle, describing their sacrifices as a foundation for the democracy Nigerians enjoy today. He called on citizens to remain united and work together to build a safer and more prosperous nation.

The President’s message comes at a time when concerns over banditry, kidnapping and terrorism remain high in several parts of the country, with security remaining one of the major issues facing many Nigerians.
