Hamzat Clinches Lagos APC Ticket as Party Settles 2027 Governorship Race

In Lagos politics, succession battles rarely unfold quietly, even when the outcome appears predictable. Party meetings, endorsements, and behind-the-scenes alignments often build up over months before finally converging into a single decisive moment that resets the political map of the state.

That moment has now arrived for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State as Deputy Governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, has officially emerged as the party’s governorship candidate for the 2027 election after securing a landslide victory in the primary election.

The exercise, held at the APC Secretariat in Acme, Ogba, was described by party officials as peaceful and tightly coordinated, with nearly unanimous support reflected in the final vote tally. According to Vanguard, Hamzat secured 657,917 votes out of 657,974 accredited votes, leaving his challenger with a single vote in what quickly became a one-sided contest.

The result was announced by the party’s electoral committee chairman, Gen. Jon Temlong (retd), who formally declared Hamzat the winner and APC flag bearer after collation.

“I hereby affirm that Dr Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat… is returned as the winner of the governorship primary,” the returning officer said during the announcement.

What stood out almost immediately was not just the scale of the victory, but the political atmosphere that surrounded it. The Lagos APC structure had already been leaning heavily in Hamzat’s direction in the weeks leading up to the primary, with endorsements from major party blocs and influential stakeholders shaping the race long before voting began.

In fact, key power groups within the party, including the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), had earlier aligned behind Hamzat in what was widely seen as a consensus arrangement ahead of the formal exercise. That internal alignment played a major role in narrowing the contest and reducing uncertainty around the outcome.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, alongside other senior party figures, was present during the process, reinforcing the sense of continuity within the party’s leadership structure as Lagos approaches another transition cycle.

But even with the overwhelming numbers, the primary still carried symbolic weight. Lagos remains one of the most politically strategic states in Nigeria, and APC’s internal decisions here often ripple beyond state politics into national conversations about party strength and succession planning.

Inside the venue, the exercise was described as orderly, with party leaders and delegates present to observe proceedings. Aspirants and stakeholders also witnessed what effectively became a consolidation moment rather than a competitive race.

The dominance of Hamzat in the final tally also reflects the earlier withdrawals and realignments that shaped the contest. Several aspirants had stepped down or aligned with the deputy governor in the days leading up to the primary, further narrowing the field and strengthening his position.

In his acceptance remarks, Hamzat expressed appreciation to party leaders and supporters, acknowledging the backing he received across different levels of the APC structure.

While the result may not have been surprising to political observers following Lagos APC dynamics, it now formally positions Hamzat as the face of the party heading into the 2027 governorship election.

The development also signals continuity within the Lagos political establishment, where succession planning is often tightly managed through internal consensus, negotiations, and strategic endorsements long before election season fully begins.

“The exercise was peaceful and transparent,” party officials maintained, describing the primary as a reflection of unity within the Lagos APC structure.

Still, beneath the surface of the celebration lies the next phase of political reality — the transition from party selection to statewide electoral contest, where broader voter dynamics, opposition strategy, and national sentiment will begin to matter more than internal party alignment.

For now, APC has settled its Lagos governorship ticket in decisive fashion. But as the 2027 election cycle gradually approaches, attention will inevitably shift from how the candidate emerged to how the party plans to defend its dominance in Nigeria’s most politically and economically influential state.

And in Lagos politics, that next battle often begins the moment the last one ends.
