“Criticise Me If You Must, But Don’t Give Up on Nigeria” — Tinubu’s Democracy Day Message

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged Nigerians to keep faith in the country despite their frustrations and disagreements with his administration.

In a nationwide address to mark Democracy Day on June 12, the President said citizens have every right to criticise him and hold leaders accountable. He, however, appealed to Nigerians not to lose hope in the nation’s future.

“Criticise me, disagree with me, but never stop believing in Nigeria,” Tinubu said while reflecting on the country’s democratic journey.

The President described Nigeria’s 27 years of uninterrupted civilian rule as a significant achievement. He noted that while the country’s democracy is not perfect, it has continued to grow through elections, peaceful transfers of power, and the rule of law.

Addressing young Nigerians, Tinubu encouraged them to see the country as their future and contribute to its development. He urged them to build businesses, create innovations, work, and participate in the democratic process rather than give up on the nation.

The President also paid tribute to the men and women who fought for democracy, particularly those linked to the June 12 struggle. He honoured the sacrifices of activists, journalists, labour leaders, politicians, and ordinary citizens who stood against oppression and helped secure democratic rule in Nigeria.

Tinubu acknowledged the security challenges facing the country, including recent incidents of kidnapping and violence. He said his administration remains committed to tackling insecurity through increased recruitment into security agencies and greater investment in defence.

According to him, democracy can only thrive when citizens feel safe and have confidence in their institutions. He called on security agencies, the judiciary, the media, civil society groups, and political leaders to continue playing their roles in protecting democratic values.

June 12 is observed annually as Nigeria’s Democracy Day in remembrance of the 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as one of the freest and fairest in the country’s history. The day honours the struggle for democratic governance and the sacrifices made by those who fought for it.

Ending his message, the President said Nigeria has faced many challenges over the years but remains resilient. He urged citizens to stay united and continue working towards a stronger and more prosperous nation.
