Amnesty International Nigeria and NCPWD Join Forces to Empower Persons With Disabilities Through Skills and Inclusion

Amnesty International Nigeria Partners With Government to Empower Persons With Disabilities Through Skills, Inclusion and Public Awareness

Abuja, Nigeria — February 2, 2026 — In a promising development for inclusion and human rights in Nigeria, Amnesty International Nigeria has initiated a collaborative effort with the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) to expand skills acquisition, public engagement and social inclusion programmes for Nigerians living with disabilities.

The discussions — held in Abuja between NCPWD leadership and Amnesty International’s Country Director, Mr. Isa Sanusi — laid the groundwork for a multi-front partnership aimed at raising awareness of disability rights, promoting accessible vocational training, and amplifying opportunities for economic participation for persons with disabilities across the country.

Strengthening Inclusion Through Skills and Awareness

Mr. Sanusi commended the Commission’s work in advancing disability rights and emphasised the need for practical collaborations that go beyond advocacy to deliver tangible improvements in people’s lives. Amnesty International pledged support for:

  • Skills acquisition programmes designed to equip persons with disabilities with market-ready competencies
  • Public awareness initiatives to reduce stigma and highlight the contributions of persons with disabilities to society
  • State-level outreach campaigns to promote access to education and employment opportunities nationwide

Speaking at the courtesy visit, Sanusi underscored that inclusion is not only a human rights imperative but also a driver of economic growth and national cohesion — aligning with Nigeria’s policy goals on employment, social equity, and sustainable development.

Why This Matters for a Nigeria Forward

This collaboration represents a positive, action-oriented chapter in the work of a global rights institution with deep roots in Nigeria, offering pathways for:

  • Empowerment of vulnerable communities through practical training and economic inclusion
  • Strengthened partnership between civil society and government on human rights implementation
  • Public education on rights protections and opportunities for all citizens
  • Policy-supportive advocacy that underpins economic inclusion and social justice

By anchoring human rights to skills development and inclusion strategies, Amnesty International Nigeria and its partners are contributing to a more equitable and productive society — a key aspiration within Nigeria’s social and economic policy frameworks.
