Troops rescue pastor’s wife in Plateau as bandit attack is foiled during military operation

A quiet night along parts of Plateau State turned tense after armed men attempted another abduction, targeting a pastor’s household in a rural community already familiar with insecurity incidents.

For residents in several parts of the state, such attacks have become a recurring fear, especially in areas where forests and isolated roads give armed groups room to strike and disappear quickly.

This time, however, the outcome shifted in a different direction.

Troops of Operation Enduring Peace have rescued the wife of a pastor after bandits attacked and attempted to abduct her in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.

Military sources said the operation followed a distress call that triggered a rapid response from troops deployed in the area, leading to a search-and-rescue effort in surrounding bushes.

The attackers were said to have fled immediately after troops closed in, abandoning their target as security pressure increased.

“Troops responded swiftly and foiled the abduction attempt during the operation,” a military source said.

The rescue forms part of a wider series of coordinated military actions across Plateau and neighbouring states, where security forces have intensified patrols following repeated kidnappings and highway attacks.

In this case, the intervention happened fast enough to prevent the abductors from moving the victim deeper into the forest, a pattern often seen in similar incidents across the region.

The rescued pastor’s wife was reportedly found during a sweep of nearby bush paths shortly after the attack was disrupted.

Security officials say such terrain remains one of the biggest operational challenges, as attackers often rely on it for escape routes and concealment after raids.

Operations in Plateau have increasingly focused on rapid response and coordinated tracking between multiple military sectors, especially around rural roads linking farming communities and trading routes.

“The aim is to ensure that attackers do not have time or space to consolidate after an attack,” another security source explained.

While the rescue is being viewed as a success, it also reflects the continuing pattern of targeted abductions in rural communities where security presence is stretched.

Plateau State has experienced repeated incidents involving kidnappings, ambushes, and attacks on isolated settlements, often carried out by armed groups operating across forest corridors.

In many cases, victims are taken only a short distance from their homes or vehicles before troops or vigilantes respond, leading to partial or full rescues depending on timing.

Security analysts say timing remains the most decisive factor in such operations. A few minutes can determine whether victims are recovered quickly or moved beyond reach.

The military has continued to emphasise joint operations, combining intelligence gathering, patrols, and rapid deployment units in an attempt to reduce response delays.

For communities affected by these incidents, each rescue brings relief, even as concerns remain about how frequently such attacks occur.

The rescued victim has since been moved for medical attention and debriefing, while troops continue follow-up operations aimed at tracking the fleeing suspects.

Authorities say efforts are ongoing to locate members of the armed group involved in the attack, as part of wider operations targeting kidnapping networks in the region.

The incident adds to a growing list of confrontations between security forces and armed groups operating across central Nigeria, where rural terrain continues to shape both attacks and responses.

For now, the focus remains on the rescue and the pursuit of those responsible, even as the broader security situation in Plateau continues to demand sustained attention from authorities.
